An attempt to heal through food.

Food heals. It can help to mend a broken heart; it can alleviate symptoms of a cold; and it can even enhance festive feelings.

My father has a terminal lung condition. So, for the last six months, I have been preparing him daily smoothies and fruit cups. This year, I want to take my efforts further.

In early December 2018, we found out that his condition had progressed. He will need to undergo a lung transplant. My eldest brother said it best: hearing that news was like Superman meeting Kryptonite. It is difficult to deal with the mortality of a loved one. But that’s another post for another day.

As my father’s only daughter I feel a sense of duty to care for him. I believe that by following a holistic diet he can help his body fight inflammation which contributes to the fibrosis in his lungs. So we made a deal: less red meats, and less meat in general, and more plant based fare. To that end, I have signed up for an online vegan culinary training course through Vegan Gastronomy Culinary Academy in Mallorca, Spain. I will complete that course later this year between my spring semester and summer courses.

In the meantime I’ll be exploring recipes and sharing the things that were successful…and things that were not. This unfortunate dis-ease is part of our path, and I am so grateful that I am able to take this journey with my father. This blog is a way for me to document the journey in perpetuity for myself and my family. Thank you for being a part of it.
